Civil law

Civil law regulates the legal affairs between citizens, between citizens and companies and between companies. This area is also named private law. The government authorities do not interfere in relationships that are regulated by this field of law. This is the difference between civil and public law (criminal, administrative and constitutional law).

Amongst the different areas of civil law you can find employment, distribution, order, sale and rental contracts. When citizens and companies cannot solve their problems by themselves, it might be necessary to start legal proceedings. The most important parties in a civil case are the plaintiff and the defendant. Witnesses and experts can also play a role. This civil proceeding is called lawsuit.

Civil law also includes family matters such as divorces. In this case, the procedure will be different: an application procedure will be initiated by an application in stead of a summon. The parties in this procedure will be called by the clerk of the court's office to appear in court en will be indicated as plaintiff and defendant.
